OpenCL.dll is missing - how to fix it

OpenCL.dll is the loader of OpenCL - the technology that lets programs like Photoshop, video converters, 3D tools and some games run heavy math on the graphics card. Here is the detail most guides skip: you never install OpenCL separately. The file arrives with your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel, and sometimes with Windows updates that replace the driver. So "OpenCL.dll is missing" almost always means the graphics driver is missing, generic, outdated or was damaged by an update - fix the driver and the file is back.

Fix it automatically

OpenCL.dll comes with your graphics driver, so the lasting fix is a correct, current one. Outbyte Driver Updater identifies your NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics chip automatically and installs the matching driver from official sources, with a backup before every change - the scan and the results are free.

Quick answer

Install the current graphics driver for your exact card - NVIDIA, AMD or Intel - choosing the clean installation option, then restart the PC. A proper driver installs OpenCL for you. On a laptop with two graphics chips, update both.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The program can't start because OpenCL.dll is missing from your computer"
Photoshop, a video converter or a 3D app crashes at startup or when a filter runs
The error appeared after a Windows update or a fresh Windows install
Device Manager shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" instead of your card
The app's GPU acceleration option is greyed out or disabled
A system file checker run complains about OpenCL.dll

Why it happens

The graphics driver is generic or missing

After a reinstall or a big Windows update, the PC often runs on Microsoft's basic display driver - it has no OpenCL at all. The proper vendor driver brings it.

A Windows update replaced the driver's copy

Windows keeps its own OpenCL.dll in System32 and occasionally overwrites the vendor's version with a broken or mismatched one - a clean driver reinstall repairs it.

The driver is outdated or damaged

Old drivers ship old OpenCL runtimes, and an interrupted driver update can leave the file half-installed.

The program runs on the wrong graphics chip

On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, the app may use the chip whose driver lacks OpenCL or is out of date.

The fixes, in order

1. Install the current graphics driver

  1. Find out your graphics chip: press Win+X, Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
  2. Install the latest driver for that exact chip from its maker (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel).
  3. Choose the clean installation option if the installer offers it - it replaces the damaged files.
  4. Restart the PC and start the program.

Honest note: an OpenCL.dll from a download site will not fix this - without the matching driver behind it, the loader has nothing to talk to, and the program fails one step later.

2. Update both chips on a laptop

  1. If Device Manager lists two display adapters, update the drivers for both.
  2. In Windows Settings, System, Display, Graphics, set the program to "High performance" so it uses the dedicated card.
  3. Restart and test.

3. Repair Windows files if the driver did not help

  1. Right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin).
  2. Run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - the known case where sfc itself reports OpenCL.dll is fixed by DISM.
  3. Restart and reinstall the graphics driver once more.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download OpenCL.dll and put it in System32?

It does not help: OpenCL.dll is only the loader, and it needs the OpenCL part of your graphics driver to work. Without the right driver the program crashes anyway - and DLL sites add malware risk on top.

sfc /scannow says it found corrupt OpenCL.dll and cannot fix it. Is that the problem?

That message is a well-known side effect of graphics driver updates, not necessarily the cause of your error. Run DISM RestoreHealth, then reinstall the graphics driver cleanly - both messages go away together.

Is this the same problem as OpenGL or Vulkan errors?

Same root cause - all three technologies live inside the graphics driver. Our OpenGL guide and vulkan-1.dll guide cover those variants.
