vulkan-1.dll was not found - how to fix it

vulkan-1.dll is the loader of Vulkan, the modern graphics API behind many current games and emulators. Here is the part most guides skip: you never install Vulkan on its own - it arrives with your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. So when Windows says vulkan-1.dll is missing, the real message is that your graphics driver is missing, outdated, damaged or the generic one Windows put in. Fix the driver and the file comes back by itself.

Fix it automatically

vulkan-1.dll comes with your graphics driver, so the lasting fix is a correct, current one. Outbyte Driver Updater identifies your NVIDIA, AMD or Intel graphics chip automatically and installs the matching driver from official sources, with a backup before every change - the scan and the results are free.

Quick answer

Install the current graphics driver for your exact card - NVIDIA, AMD or Intel - then restart the PC. A proper driver installs the Vulkan runtime (you will see "Vulkan Runtime Libraries" in Installed apps afterwards). On a laptop with two graphics chips, update both.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The code execution cannot proceed because vulkan-1.dll was not found"
A game or emulator says Vulkan is not supported or failed to initialize
The error appeared after a Windows update or a fresh Windows install
Device Manager shows "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" instead of your card
The game runs on another PC with the same Windows
Switching the game to DirectX instead of Vulkan makes it start

Why it happens

The graphics driver is generic or missing

After a reinstall or a big Windows update, the PC often runs on Microsoft's basic display driver - it has no Vulkan at all. The proper vendor driver brings it.

The driver is outdated or damaged

Old drivers ship old Vulkan runtimes, and an interrupted driver update can leave the runtime half-installed. A clean, current driver repairs both.

The game runs on the wrong graphics chip

On laptops with integrated and dedicated graphics, a game may start on the chip whose driver lacks Vulkan support or is out of date.

The graphics card is too old for Vulkan

Cards from before roughly 2012 (and some early integrated graphics) never got Vulkan support. No driver adds it - the game needs its DirectX or OpenGL mode.

The fixes, in order

1. Install the current graphics driver

  1. Find out your graphics chip: press Win+X, Device Manager, expand Display adapters.
  2. Install the latest driver for that exact chip from its maker (NVIDIA, AMD or Intel).
  3. Choose the clean installation option if the installer offers it.
  4. Restart the PC and start the game.

Honest note: a vulkan-1.dll from a download site does not fix this - without the matching driver behind it, the loader has nothing to talk to, and the game fails one step later.

2. Update both chips on a laptop

  1. If Device Manager lists two display adapters, update the drivers for both.
  2. In Windows Settings, System, Display, Graphics, set the game to "High performance" so it uses the dedicated card.
  3. Restart and test.

3. Check that your card supports Vulkan

  1. Search the exact model of your card together with "Vulkan support".
  2. If it is not supported, switch the game to DirectX or OpenGL in its settings or launch options.
  3. Emulators usually offer an OpenGL backend for exactly this case.

Frequently asked questions

Can I download vulkan-1.dll and put it in the game folder?

It does not help: vulkan-1.dll is only the loader, and it needs the Vulkan part of your graphics driver to work. Without the right driver the game crashes anyway - and DLL sites add malware risk on top.

Do I need to install a separate Vulkan runtime?

No - current NVIDIA, AMD and Intel drivers install it for you. If "Vulkan Runtime Libraries" is missing from Installed apps after a driver install, the installation did not complete - reinstall the driver.

Is this the same problem as an OpenGL error?

Same root cause: both graphics APIs live inside the graphics driver. Our OpenGL guide covers that variant.
