d3dcompiler_47.dll is missing - how to fix it

d3dcompiler_47.dll is the modern DirectX shader compiler, and it is different from its older siblings (_43 and company): it is not part of the legacy DirectX runtime. On Windows 10 and 11 it ships with the system itself; on Windows 7 and 8.1 Microsoft delivered it through a Windows update. Many games and apps (Chrome-based programs among them) also carry a copy. So the fix depends on your Windows - a system repair or an update, not a download site.

Fix it automatically

Outbyte PC Repair checks Windows for corrupted system files, registry problems and leftovers from removed programs - the kind of damage behind errors like this one. Useful when you would rather not run the steps below by hand - the check and the diagnosis are free, and nothing is changed until you decide.

Quick answer

On Windows 10/11: open Terminal (Admin) and run sfc /scannow, then DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, restart. On Windows 7/8.1: install all pending Windows updates (the file arrives with a platform update), restart. In both cases also verify the game or app that shows the error.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The program can't start because d3dcompiler_47.dll is missing from your computer"
A game or a modern app fails at launch on Windows 7 or 8.1 with updates turned off
The error appeared on Windows 10/11 after a failed update or an aggressive cleanup
A freshly installed program quits immediately with this message
Reinstalling the program did not help
Other DirectX-era files are not reported missing

Why it happens

Windows 7/8.1 without the platform update

The compiler reached older Windows through Windows Update. With updates disabled or stuck, the system never got the file - and programs built for it fail.

Damaged system files on Windows 10/11

Here the file is part of the system. A failed update, disk error or cleanup tool can corrupt it - the built-in repair restores it.

The program's own copy got removed

Many apps carry the DLL in their folder; an antivirus or a broken install can take it away. Reinstalling or verifying the app brings it back.

A loose copy from a DLL site

A downloaded file may be the wrong build or bitness and often causes a second error right after the first one disappears.

The fixes, in order

1. Windows 10/11: repair the system files

  1. Right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin).
  2. Run sfc /scannow and wait for it to finish.
  3. Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth.
  4. Restart the PC and start the program.

Stay safe: on modern Windows the only legitimate source of this file is the system itself - the repair tools above, or a Windows update.

2. Windows 7/8.1: install the pending updates

  1. Open Windows Update and install everything offered, including optional platform updates.
  2. Restart, then check for updates again - the file sometimes arrives in a second round.
  3. Start the program.

3. Verify or reinstall the program

  1. Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Other programs: uninstall in Settings, Apps, restart, install fresh - installers bring their own copy.

Frequently asked questions

Will the DirectX End-User Runtime fix d3dcompiler_47.dll?

No - that installer only carries the legacy files (_43 and older). The _47 compiler comes with Windows itself or with the program; use the repair steps or Windows Update instead. Our d3dcompiler_43.dll guide covers the legacy variant.

Can I copy d3dcompiler_47.dll from another PC?

On Windows 10/11 the repair tools restore the correct version in seconds; on Windows 7 a copy may work but the update also brings related files the program needs - updating is the reliable route.

Why does a Chrome-based app show this error?

Chromium ships its own d3dcompiler_47.dll next to the app for hardware acceleration. If that copy is missing, reinstalling the app restores it - no system change needed.

The automatic route, whenever you are ready

Outbyte PC Repair checks the system and shows what it found - then waits. Nothing is applied without your OK, and a restore point lets you undo changes.
