xlive.dll is missing - how to fix it

xlive.dll is the client library of Games for Windows Live (GFWL) - Microsoft's online service that many PC games of 2007-2013 were built around (GTA IV, Fallout 3, Dark Souls, Batman: Arkham Asylum and others). The service was shut down years ago, so an old game asking for xlive.dll is asking for a client that is no longer installed by default. There are two honest routes: install the archived GFWL client, or use the game's updated version that removed GFWL - most of those games got one.

Outbyte PC Repair checks Windows for corrupted system files, registry problems and leftovers from removed programs - the kind of damage behind errors like this one. Quick answer

First check whether your game has an updated edition without GFWL - Steam versions of most affected games were patched to drop it, and verifying the game files brings that version in. If the game still needs GFWL, install the Games for Windows Live client (the archived Microsoft installer, xliveredist) and restart the game.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The program can't start because xlive.dll is missing from your computer"
A game from 2007-2013 fails at launch on a modern PC
The error appeared after a Windows reinstall
The game runs on an older PC where Games for Windows Live was installed
A disc or old download version shows it; the Steam version does not
Other games start fine

Why it happens

Games for Windows Live is not installed

The client was a separate Microsoft install that older game installers started automatically. A fresh Windows has no trace of it.

You run an old version of the game

Publishers patched many titles to remove GFWL entirely. An old disc or download build still looks for xlive.dll - the current build does not.

The client got removed during a cleanup

Uninstalling another old game or a cleanup tool can remove the shared GFWL files.

A loose DLL from a download site

xlive.dll alone does not work - the client registers services and files around it. Copies from DLL sites are also a classic malware carrier for this exact filename.

The fixes, in order

1. Get the game version without GFWL

  1. Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files - patched builds no longer need xlive.dll.
  2. Check the game's store page or community hub: most affected titles announce the GFWL removal.
  3. For disc versions, look for the publisher's official patch that removes GFWL.

Honest note: this is the clean fix. Games for Windows Live is dead; the less you depend on it, the fewer problems with saves and sign-in you will have.

2. Install the archived Games for Windows Live client

  1. Download the Games for Windows Live client installer (xliveredist / gfwlivesetup) from a trusted archive of Microsoft's original files.
  2. Run it, let it finish, restart the PC.
  3. Start the game; create or sign into a local (offline) GFWL profile if asked.

3. Run the game in compatibility mode

  1. Right-click the game's shortcut, Properties, Compatibility.
  2. Enable "Run this program in compatibility mode for" Windows 7.
  3. Apply and start the game - old GFWL titles often need this on Windows 10/11 anyway.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just download xlive.dll?

It will not work on its own - the client installs services and registry entries the DLL depends on. And this filename is one of the most abused on DLL sites. Use the game's patched version or the archived client installer.

Will my old saves survive if the game drops GFWL?

Usually the patched version migrates saves on first launch; some games needed a one-time manual copy. The game's community hub typically has the exact steps for your title.

Is Games for Windows Live still safe to install?

The archived Microsoft client installs fine on Windows 10/11 and works offline. Its online features are gone, so expect sign-in errors you can skip - that is normal.
