steam_api64.dll is the small library a game uses to talk to Steam - every Steam game carries its own copy right in the game folder. When Windows cannot find it, the copy is gone, and in nine cases out of ten it was removed by an antivirus: this file triggers false positives constantly because game protections wrap it. The fix is restoring the original file through Steam itself, not downloading a loose DLL from a site.

Open your antivirus quarantine first - if steam_api64.dll is there, restore it and add the game folder to the exclusions. Then, in Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files - Steam puts back the exact file the game shipped with.
The most common cause by far. Game copy-protection wraps this DLL, and antivirus heuristics flag the wrapper - the file is taken away silently, sometimes on every launch.
An interrupted download or a disk hiccup during install can leave the game folder without the file - verification in Steam repairs exactly this.
A copy obtained outside official stores often has this file altered or stripped by whoever repacked it. There is no clean fix for that case - and a downloaded replacement DLL is the classic malware delivery trick.
steam_api64.dll from a DLL site does not match your game's version and is a favourite disguise for trojans - this specific filename is among the most abused on the whole internet.
Honest note: restore and exclude only for a game you own on Steam. If the game came from an unofficial source, the warning may be about real malware - do not whitelist it blindly.
This is the one DLL where that advice is genuinely dangerous: the filename is a top target for malware disguises, and a mismatched version will not work with your game anyway. Steam's file verification restores the authentic copy for free in a minute.
Game copy-protection wraps steam_api64.dll in ways that look suspicious to heuristics. It is a known, years-old false-positive pattern. Restoring the file and excluding the game folder is the accepted solution - for games you actually own.
Same fix - steam_api.dll is the 32-bit twin used by older games. Quarantine check plus Steam file verification covers both.
Outbyte PC Repair checks the system and shows what it found - then waits. Nothing is applied without your OK, and a restore point lets you undo changes.
