ScanSnap S1500 on a modern Windows

The ScanSnap S1500 is a legend that refuses to retire - and a special case: it has no standard TWAIN driver, so it works only through its own ScanSnap Manager software. The scanner is long discontinued, the brand has moved from Fujitsu/PFU to Ricoh, and the setup disc is useless on modern Windows - but the software still exists, and the S1500 still scans happily once it is installed the right way.

Quick answer

Download ScanSnap Manager for the S1500 from the official ScanSnap support site (the PFU/Ricoh scanner support pages - search "ScanSnap S1500 downloads"). Install it BEFORE connecting the scanner, then plug in USB and power the scanner on by opening the lid. Windows setup alone will not do it - the S1500 works only through ScanSnap Manager.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

The scanner powers on but nothing sees it on a new PC
Windows shows no scanner in Settings at all
"ScanSnap Manager is not connected" in the tray
Scan button on the scanner does nothing
Other scan apps cannot find the S1500
The setup disc is for Windows XP/7 and will not install

Why it happens

No TWAIN driver by design

The S1500 speaks only to ScanSnap Manager - without it, Windows and third-party scan apps have nothing to talk to. This is normal, not a fault.

Ancient disc, modern Windows

The bundled software predates Windows 10 - only the last ScanSnap Manager builds from the official support site install on current systems.

Wrong installation order

Connecting the scanner before ScanSnap Manager is installed leaves a dead device entry that confuses the real setup.

Power and cable quirks

The S1500 wakes when the lid opens and sleeps aggressively; a worn USB cable or a hub makes it flicker in and out of existence.

The fixes, in order

1. Install ScanSnap Manager the right way

  1. On the official ScanSnap support site (PFU/Ricoh), open the S1500 downloads page and get the latest ScanSnap Manager for Windows.
  2. Disconnect the scanner, run the installer to the end.
  3. Connect USB directly to the PC and open the scanner lid - it powers on and ScanSnap Manager's tray icon goes active.
  4. Press the blue Scan button to test.

2. Fix "ScanSnap Manager is not connected"

  1. Close the lid, wait a few seconds, open it again - the S1500 wakes on lid open.
  2. Swap to a rear USB port, no hubs; try another cable.
  3. Right-click the tray icon and exit ScanSnap Manager, then start it again from the Start menu.
  4. Still dead? Uninstall the device under Imaging devices in Device Manager, unplug, replug.

3. Clean up an out-of-order install

  1. Disconnect the scanner. Uninstall ScanSnap software from Settings, Apps.
  2. In Device Manager remove leftover ScanSnap entries (View, Show hidden devices helps).
  3. Restart the PC and run method 1 from the start - order is everything with this scanner.

Frequently asked questions

Does the ScanSnap S1500 work on Windows 11?

Officially the S1500's support list ends at Windows 10 - the model is discontinued. In practice the last ScanSnap Manager build installs and scans on Windows 11 for many users, with no guarantees from the vendor. Install it in the driver-first order and test; on a machine where it refuses, Windows 10 remains the safe harbor.

Can I use the S1500 with other scanning software?

Mostly no - there is no TWAIN driver, so apps that expect one cannot see it. ScanSnap Manager does the scanning and hands files (PDF, JPEG) to other programs; automation goes through its profiles rather than through the apps directly.

Is ScanSnap Home a replacement for ScanSnap Manager here?

No - ScanSnap Home does not support the S1500. This model stays with ScanSnap Manager; that is the package to download from the official support pages.
