PhysXLoader.dll is missing - how to fix it

PhysXLoader.dll is the loader of NVIDIA PhysX - the physics engine behind explosions, cloth and debris in a large wave of games from roughly 2008 to 2015. Despite the NVIDIA name it is not tied to NVIDIA cards: every game that uses PhysX carries its own copy and installs the PhysX System Software alongside. When Windows cannot find the file, the game's PhysX part is missing or damaged - an antivirus took it, the bundled installer was skipped, or the installation broke. The fix goes through the game, never through a DLL site.

Fix it automatically

Outbyte PC Repair checks Windows for corrupted system files, registry problems and leftovers from removed programs - the kind of damage behind errors like this one. Useful when you would rather not run the steps below by hand - the check and the diagnosis are free, and nothing is changed until you decide.

Quick answer

Run the PhysX installer that came with the game: look in the game folder for a _CommonRedist, Redist or PhysX subfolder and start the setup there. No such folder? Verify the game files in its launcher - it restores both the DLL and the installer.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The program can't start because PhysXLoader.dll is missing from your computer"
An older game crashes right at launch, before the menu
The error appeared after a cleanup or an antivirus scan
The game was copied from another PC instead of installed
You have an AMD or Intel card and assumed PhysX did not apply
Other games run fine

Why it happens

The bundled PhysX installer was skipped

Older game installers ran the PhysX setup as an optional last step. Cancel it, and the game starts without its physics runtime.

The antivirus or a cleanup removed it

Game folders get swept by heuristics and cleaner tools; the loader DLL disappears together with other flagged files.

An incomplete or copied installation

A game folder copied from another PC has the DLL but not the registered runtime - PhysX needs both.

A wrong version from a DLL site

PhysX has many versions and games are picky about theirs. A downloaded copy usually trades "missing" for a crash a second later.

The fixes, in order

1. Run the PhysX installer from the game folder

  1. Open the game folder (Steam: right-click the game, Manage, Browse local files).
  2. Find a _CommonRedist, Redist or PhysX subfolder.
  3. Run the PhysX setup there (PhysX_*_SystemSoftware.exe or similar) and restart the game.

Honest note: the installer bundled with the game is the version the game was tested with. The current NVIDIA PhysX System Software from nvidia.com also works for most titles and installs fine on AMD and Intel systems.

2. Verify the game files in the launcher

  1. Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
  2. GOG Galaxy: the game's settings icon, Manage installation, Verify / Repair.
  3. Launch the game - the launcher restores the DLL and re-runs the bundled installers.

3. Check the antivirus quarantine

  1. Open the quarantine (Windows Security: Virus & threat protection, Protection history).
  2. Restore PhysXLoader.dll if it is listed and add the game folder to the exclusions - for games from official sources.
  3. Start the game.

Frequently asked questions

I have an AMD card. Do I still need PhysX?

Yes - the game needs the PhysX runtime to start at all; on non-NVIDIA cards the physics simply runs on the processor. The installer from the game folder or nvidia.com installs on any system.

Can I just download PhysXLoader.dll?

It usually does not help: the loader needs the registered PhysX runtime behind it, and version mismatches crash the game anyway. The bundled installer or file verification restores the matching set.

The next launch asks for cudart.dll or another PhysX file. Related?

Same package - the PhysX System Software installs all of them together. If one is missing after the installer ran, the install was interrupted: run it again and let it finish.
