OpenAL32.dll is missing - how to fix it safely

OpenAL32.dll is the OpenAL audio library - a free, cross-platform 3D sound layer used by many games and some audio software. Windows does not include it; games either bring the OpenAL installer along or expect it to be present. When it is missing, the fix is short and official: the OpenAL Windows installer from openal.org puts the library where every program finds it.

Quick answer

Download the OpenAL Windows Installer from openal.org (the file is called oalinst.exe), run it and restart the game. If the game folder has a _CommonRedist or Redist folder with oalinst.exe inside, running that copy works just as well.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"The program can't start because OpenAL32.dll is missing from your computer"
A game crashes at launch on a new or freshly reinstalled PC
The game starts but has no sound at all
The error appeared after a Windows reinstall
Reinstalling the game did not help
Other games play sound normally

Why it happens

OpenAL was never installed

Windows ships without it. Games that use OpenAL expect the library to be installed system-wide - the first one on a fresh PC shows the error.

The game's redistributable step was skipped

Installers often run oalinst.exe silently; if that step was cancelled or failed, the library never landed.

The library got removed

Uninstalling another game or an aggressive cleanup can take the shared OpenAL files with it.

A loose DLL from a site

A downloaded OpenAL32.dll may be the wrong build or bitness - the official installer places both 32-bit and 64-bit copies correctly.

The fixes, in order

1. Install OpenAL from the official site

  1. Go to openal.org, Downloads section.
  2. Download the OpenAL Windows Installer (oalinst.exe).
  3. Run it - it takes seconds - and restart the game.

Stay safe: use openal.org or the installer that came with your game. DLL download sites offer this file with no guarantees.

2. Run the game's bundled installer

  1. Open the game folder (Steam: right-click, Manage, Browse local files).
  2. Look for _CommonRedist, Redist or OpenAL subfolders.
  3. Run oalinst.exe from there and restart the game.

3. Verify the game files

  1. Steam: right-click the game, Properties, Installed Files, Verify integrity of game files.
  2. Other launchers have the same repair option.
  3. Then repeat method 1 if the error persists.

Frequently asked questions

Is OpenAL safe to install?

Yes - it is a long-standing open audio standard, and the Windows installer from openal.org has been the official way to add it for years. It installs a small library and nothing else.

The game starts but has no sound. Same problem?

Often yes - some games fall back to silence instead of showing an error when OpenAL is missing. Installing it is the first thing to try.

Do I need a special version for 64-bit Windows?

No - the official installer places both the 32-bit and the 64-bit library correctly, so every game finds the copy it needs.
