MTP driver failed - phone charges, files do not show

When a phone connects over USB, file access runs through MTP - the Media Transfer Protocol. If its driver fails, you get the most confusing state in Windows: the phone clearly charges, may even appear in Explorer, but opens empty or throws "MTP USB Device - driver error". The fix is almost always on the Windows side, and it is quick.

Quick answer

Unlock the phone, pull down the notification shade, tap the USB notification and switch from "Charging only" to File transfer / MTP. No notification at all? Change the cable - charge-only cables have no data lines. If the mode is right and Explorer is still empty, reinstall the MTP entry in Device Manager - method 3 below.

Why it happens

Charge-only USB mode

Phones default to charging when connected. Until File transfer (MTP) is chosen on the phone, Windows has nothing to mount - this is the number one cause.

Charge-only or worn cable

Many bundled and cheap cables carry power only. Without data lines, no USB mode selector even appears on the phone.

The MTP driver entry broke

The Portable Devices entry in Device Manager failed or got mismatched - reinstalling it restores file access.

Windows N editions lack media components

MTP relies on Windows Media components, which N editions ship without - installing Microsoft's free Media Feature Pack fixes MTP there.

The fixes, in order

1. Set the right mode on the phone

  1. Unlock the phone - locked phones hide their storage from the PC.
  2. Pull down the notification shade and tap the USB / charging notification.
  3. Choose File transfer (also labeled MTP or Transfer files).
  4. The phone should appear in Explorer under This PC within a few seconds.

2. Swap the cable and port

  1. Use a cable that is known to transfer data (the one that came with the phone, or one that works on another PC).
  2. Plug into a different USB port, directly - not through a hub.
  3. If the USB mode notification now appears on the phone, the old cable was the problem.

3. Reinstall the MTP entry in Device Manager

  1. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, expand Portable Devices (also check Other devices).
  2. Right-click the phone / MTP USB Device entry and choose Uninstall device.
  3. Unplug the phone, wait a few seconds, plug it back in - Windows reinstalls the entry.
  4. If the yellow mark returns: right-click, Update driver, "Let me pick from a list", and select MTP USB Device.

4. Windows N edition: install the Media Feature Pack

  1. Check your edition: Settings, System, About - if it says Windows 10 N or 11 N, MTP is missing its media components.
  2. Open Settings, Apps, Optional features, Add a feature, and install Media Feature Pack.
  3. Restart the PC and reconnect the phone.

Frequently asked questions

The phone shows up but the folder is empty. Why?

Either the phone is locked (unlock it and keep the screen on), or it is still in charging mode - switch to File transfer in the USB notification. Both states make the phone visible but its storage inaccessible.

Is MTP the same as connecting a USB stick?

No. A USB stick mounts as a disk; MTP is a media protocol where the phone stays in control of its files. That is why a failed MTP driver leaves the phone visible-but-empty instead of missing entirely.

Can I use photos import instead of Explorer?

Yes - once MTP works, the Photos app import and Explorer both function. If import fails while Explorer works, unlock the phone and allow the access prompt it shows on first connection.
