ISDone.dll error - why installers fail to unpack

ISDone.dll and its companion unarc.dll do one job: unpack the heavily compressed archives inside a game installer. When you see this error, the installer failed mid-unpacking - and the cause is almost never a missing DLL. It is the archive being damaged, the antivirus interfering, or the PC running out of memory or disk during decompression. That is why downloading ISDone.dll from a site never fixes it - the file was fine, the unpacking was not.

Fix it automatically

Outbyte PC Repair checks Windows for corrupted system files, registry problems and leftovers from removed programs - the kind of damage behind errors like this one. Useful when you would rather not run the steps below by hand - the check and the diagnosis are free, and nothing is changed until you decide.

Quick answer

Three things fix most ISDone errors: free up disk space (the game needs room for both the archives and the unpacked files), add the installer folder to the antivirus exclusions for the duration of the install, and re-download the installer if the error repeats at the same percentage - that is a damaged archive.

Symptoms - how this problem looks

"An error occurred while unpacking: Unarc.dll returned an error code: -1" (or -7, -11, -12, -14)
"ISDone.dll - an error occurred while unpacking: archive corrupted"
The installation always stops at the same percentage
The error appears only with large game installers
The same installer works on another PC
The install slows down heavily, then fails near the end

Why it happens

The installer archive is damaged

An interrupted or slightly corrupted download breaks the compressed archive - unpacking then fails at the exact same spot every time. Only a fresh download cures it.

The antivirus interferes mid-unpack

Real-time scanning locks or removes files while the installer writes thousands of them - unpacking errors with random codes are the result.

Not enough disk space or RAM

Heavily compressed installers need several gigabytes of working room beyond the final game size, and low memory kills the decompressor with error codes -1 or -7.

Unstable overclock or failing RAM

Decompression is one of the most memory-intensive things a home PC does. An aggressive XMP profile or a failing module shows up here first - error codes differ between attempts.

The fixes, in order

1. Make room and retry cleanly

  1. Check free space on the target disk - have at least the game's size plus 10-15 GB spare.
  2. Close browsers and heavy apps to free RAM.
  3. Run the installer as administrator.

2. Pause the antivirus for the install

  1. Add the installer's folder and the target folder to the antivirus exclusions.
  2. Or temporarily disable real-time protection for the duration of the install.
  3. Re-enable protection right after - this is a time-boxed exception, not a permanent one.

Honest note: only do this for an installer from a source you trust. If you are not sure where the installer came from, the antivirus stopping it may be the best outcome.

3. Re-download if it fails at the same spot

  1. An error at the same percentage every run = a damaged archive, nothing on your PC fixes it.
  2. Download the installer again, ideally with a download manager or the store's own client.
  3. If the source offers checksums, compare them before installing.

4. Test the memory if codes keep changing

  1. Different error codes on every attempt point at RAM, not the archive.
  2. Disable XMP / memory overclock in BIOS and retry.
  3. Run Windows Memory Diagnostic (press Win, type mdsched) and let it check the modules.

Frequently asked questions

Will downloading ISDone.dll or unarc.dll fix the error?

No - those files are part of the installer itself and they are not broken. The error is the unpacking failing around them: damaged archive, interference, or lack of resources. A downloaded DLL changes nothing except adding risk.

Why does it always stop at the same percentage?

That is the signature of a damaged archive: unpacking reaches the broken block and dies there every time. Only re-downloading the installer helps.

Why do huge games hit this error more often?

Big installers use extreme compression to cut download size. Unpacking them is heavy on RAM and disk, so marginal hardware problems and space shortages surface exactly here.
