How to install Bluetooth on a Windows PC

"Install Bluetooth" means different things on different machines. Laptops almost always have the radio built in - it only needs enabling or a driver. Desktops very often ship without Bluetooth at all - no software can conjure the hardware, but a $10 USB adapter adds it in minutes. Step one is finding out which situation is yours; everything else follows from that.

Right-click Start, open Device Manager. A Bluetooth section = the hardware is there; enable it in Settings, Bluetooth & devices (and check quick actions for the Bluetooth tile). No Bluetooth section anywhere, including under "Show hidden devices"? A desktop most likely has no radio - plug in a USB Bluetooth adapter, and Windows sets it up on its own.

Why it happens

The desktop has no radio

Most desktop motherboards without Wi-Fi have no Bluetooth either - the feature rides on the wireless card. No driver can install what is not there.

The radio is there but disabled

Airplane mode, a function-key toggle, or a BIOS/UEFI setting can switch the radio off - Windows then shows no trace of it.

The driver is missing

After a clean Windows install the radio may sit under Other devices as an unknown entry until its driver is installed.

The stack broke

Bluetooth used to work and vanished - that is a repair case, not an install case; the driver stack needs rebuilding.

The fixes, in order

1. Find out what your PC actually has

  1. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, select View, Show hidden devices.
  2. Look for a Bluetooth section - and check Network adapters: a Wi-Fi card named Intel/Realtek/MediaTek usually carries Bluetooth too.
  3. Check Other devices for unknown entries - a radio without a driver hides there.
  4. Nothing anywhere on a desktop? The machine has no Bluetooth hardware - go to method 4.

2. Enable it when the hardware is present

  1. Settings, Bluetooth & devices - switch Bluetooth on.
  2. Check Airplane mode is off; on laptops also try the function key with the radio symbol.
  3. No luck? Reboot into BIOS/UEFI setup and make sure Wireless / Bluetooth is enabled.
  4. Then pair: Settings, Bluetooth & devices, Add device.

3. Install the missing driver

  1. Settings, Windows Update, Advanced options, Optional updates - install anything mentioning Bluetooth.
  2. Or install the Bluetooth package matching your Wi-Fi card's maker (Intel cards - from Intel; Realtek/MediaTek - from the laptop maker's support page).
  3. The unknown device in Other devices should become the Bluetooth radio after the install.

4. Add Bluetooth to a desktop that has none

  1. Buy a USB Bluetooth adapter (dongle) - 5.x versions cost little and cover headphones, mice and controllers.
  2. Plug it into a rear USB port; Windows installs the driver automatically for the common chipsets.
  3. If the adapter came with a driver package for Windows 11/10, install it only when pairing misbehaves with the built-in one.
  4. A Bluetooth section appears in Device Manager and the toggle appears in Settings - pair away.
