EXE file errors on Windows

An .exe file is a program you can run. When Windows reports one as missing, corrupted or refusing to start, the cause is usually one of four things: a broken installation, malware interference, a conflict between programs, or damaged system files. Here is how to work through them.

The fixes, in order

1. Reinstall the affected program

  1. Open Settings, then Apps, then Installed apps, and uninstall the program that fails.
  2. Download a fresh installer from the developer's official website - never from a mirror or "download portal".
  3. Install and try again. A broken or interrupted installation is the single most common cause.

2. Scan for malware

  1. Open Windows Security, then Virus & threat protection.
  2. Run a full scan - malware often targets or disguises itself as .exe files.
  3. Remove anything found, restart, and test the program again.

3. Repair system files

  1. Right-click Start, open Terminal (Admin), and run sfc /scannow.
  2. If errors persist, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then SFC again.

4. Test in Safe Mode

  1. Hold Shift and select Restart, then Troubleshoot, Advanced options, Startup Settings, and press 4.
  2. If the program runs in Safe Mode, another application is interfering - most often an overzealous antivirus or a second security tool. Review what launched at startup.

5. Roll back if it worked before

  1. Press the Windows key, type "restore point", open Create a restore point, then System Restore.
  2. Choose a point dated before the error appeared and confirm.

If the error mentions a .dll file rather than the program itself, follow the DLL file errors guide - the fix is different.
