Epson EcoTank on Windows - driver install that actually works

The EcoTank family (ET-2850, ET-3850 and the L-series - L3250 and its siblings) shares one setup story: Windows can often print to them with a basic driver, but scanning, Wi-Fi setup and ink monitoring only appear with Epson's own package. If your EcoTank prints but won't scan, or is not detected at all, the fix is installing the right package in the right order.

The fixes, in order

1. Install Epson's full package in the correct order

  1. Find the exact model on the printer's front label (ET-2850 and ET-2856 differ; L3250 and L3256 differ).
  2. On Epson's official support site, download the combined driver and utilities package for your Windows.
  3. Disconnect the printer, run the installer, and connect USB or pick Wi-Fi setup only when the installer asks.
  4. Finish, then print a test page and open Epson Scan 2 to confirm scanning works.

2. Fix Wi-Fi discovery

  1. Make sure printer and PC are on the same network name - and not a guest network.
  2. Print the network status sheet from the printer's panel (Settings or Wi-Fi menu) to see its IP address.
  3. Re-run Epson's installer and choose the network connection - or add the printer by IP: Settings, Printers & scanners, Add device, "Add manually", "Add a printer using an IP address".

3. Clean up a failed earlier attempt

  1. Disconnect the printer. Remove all its entries in Settings, Printers & scanners.
  2. Uninstall old Epson software in Settings, Apps (driver, Scan 2, Event Manager).
  3. Restart the PC and run method 1 from the start.

4. Prints but will not scan

  1. Install Epson Scan 2 from the same support page if the full package was skipped.
  2. USB: try a rear port, no hubs. Network: scanning needs the IP - open Epson Scan 2 Utility and re-select the scanner.
  3. Windows Firewall prompt during first scan - allow it; a blocked prompt is a classic silent killer of network scanning.
