Code 43 - Windows has stopped this device

Code 43 is Device Manager's way of saying the device itself reported a failure and Windows shut it down. It appears on USB sticks, phones, webcams and - notoriously - graphics cards. The good news: in most cases the device is fine, and the problem sits in the driver or in power delivery. Here is the fix order that resolves it most often.

Quick answer

Shut the computer down completely (not restart), unplug the power cord - on a laptop also disconnect the charger - wait 30 seconds, then boot again. This full power cycle clears Code 43 surprisingly often. If the error returns, reinstall the device's driver: Device Manager, right-click the device, Uninstall device, restart.

Why it happens

The driver crashed

The device driver hit an internal error and told Windows to stop the device. A reinstall or update of the driver clears it.

Power delivery hiccup

USB ports and GPUs are sensitive to power. A brownout, an overloaded hub or a sleep/wake cycle can leave the device in a failed state until fully power-cycled.

A bad driver update

Code 43 that starts right after a Windows update or driver change points at the new driver - rolling back usually fixes it.

The hardware really is failing

Less common, but real: if the device shows Code 43 on every computer and cable, the fault is in the device itself.

The fixes, in order

1. Full power cycle - fixes more Code 43 cases than anything else

  1. Close your work and shut down Windows completely (Start, Power, Shut down - not Restart).
  2. Unplug the power cord from a desktop; unplug the charger from a laptop.
  3. Wait 30 seconds, plug power back in and boot.
  4. Check Device Manager - the yellow triangle is often simply gone.

Restart is not enough: fast startup keeps devices half-initialized. Only a full shutdown with power removed resets them.

2. For USB devices: replug and change the port

  1. Unplug the device and plug it into a different USB port - on a desktop, a rear port straight on the motherboard.
  2. Skip hubs, extension cables and front-panel ports for the test.
  3. Try a different cable if one is involved - charge-only cables and worn cables cause device errors too.

3. Reinstall the driver

  1. Right-click Start, open Device Manager, find the device with the yellow triangle.
  2. Right-click it, choose Uninstall device; if offered, tick "Attempt to remove the driver for this device".
  3. Restart the PC - Windows redetects the device and installs a fresh driver.
  4. Still Code 43? Right-click the device, Update driver, Search automatically for drivers.

4. Roll back - if the error started after an update

  1. In Device Manager double-click the device and open the Driver tab.
  2. If Roll Back Driver is clickable, use it, pick any reason and restart.
  3. For a graphics card: roll back on the Display adapters entry, then block the bad update from reinstalling until a newer driver arrives.

5. Rule out the hardware

  1. Try the device on another computer, or another identical device on this one.
  2. If Code 43 follows the device everywhere - the device is faulty; no driver will fix it.
  3. If the device works elsewhere, the problem is on this PC: repeat methods 1-4, and check chipset and USB controller drivers.

Does Code 43 mean my device is dead?

Usually not. Code 43 means the device reported a failure - which a crashed driver or a power glitch also triggers. Only if the device shows Code 43 on every computer, port and cable does hardware failure become the likely answer.

My graphics card shows Code 43. Is it special?

GPUs are the most famous Code 43 case. The fix order is the same - full power cycle, then a clean reinstall of the graphics driver. If the card shows Code 43 in every PC, it is a hardware fault.
