Canon LBP2900 on a modern Windows - the CAPT driver

The LBP2900 is one of those lasers that refuses to die - and one of the trickiest to set up, because it speaks only Canon's proprietary CAPT protocol. No generic or built-in Windows driver can print to it: without Canon's own CAPT driver the printer connects, sits in the device list and prints nothing. The setup is easy once the order is right.

Why it happens

The fixes, in order

1. Install in the correct order

  1. Disconnect the printer's USB cable.
  2. Download the latest CAPT driver for the LBP2900/LBP2900B from Canon's official support site for your region - 64-bit for any modern PC.
  3. Right-click the installer and Run as administrator; follow the wizard.
  4. Connect the USB cable and power the printer on when the installer asks - it finds the printer and completes the setup.
  5. Print a test page.

2. Clean up a wrong earlier install

  1. Disconnect the printer. In Settings, Printers & scanners remove every LBP2900 entry.
  2. In Device Manager (right-click Start) check Printers and Universal Serial Bus controllers for leftover Canon entries and uninstall them.
  3. Restart the PC and run method 1 from the beginning.

3. Jobs stuck even with the CAPT driver

  1. Plug USB directly into the PC - no hubs; try a rear port and a different cable.
  2. Restart Print Spooler: Win+R, services.msc, Print Spooler, Restart.
  3. Open the Canon CAPT status window (it installs with the driver) - it reports the printer's actual state and errors.
  4. Power-cycle the printer after clearing the queue - CAPT printers hold a failed job until reset.
